I had irrigation โ€” what aftercare do I need?

Following gentle warm water irrigation, it's important to keep your ear canals dry for a short while to reduce the risk of infection from water-borne bacteria. Take care when showering or washing your hair, and avoid swimming while the canals settle.

The irrigation process can slightly dry the canals and strip away some of the natural oils secreted inside the ear. These natural oils return to normal levels after a few days, and no other aftercare is needed.

I had microsuction โ€” what aftercare do I need?

Good news: after microsuction there's no need to keep your ears dry, because it's a dry procedure and the natural oil levels in the ear haven't been affected. No other precautions or aftercare are needed โ€” you can carry on as normal.

Sore ears following wax removal

Soreness after wax removal is extremely rare. If you've had a large amount of wax removed, the ear canals can remain a little sensitive, which may feel like mild soreness.

This discomfort should only last a day or so and can be settled with over-the-counter painkillers. If the pain continues, or is moderate to severe, we suggest a GP appointment to rule out an ear infection.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to keep my ears dry after treatment?
Only after irrigation โ€” keep the ear canals dry for a short while to reduce the risk of infection while the natural oils recover over a few days. After microsuction no precautions are needed, as it's a dry procedure.
Is it normal for my ears to feel sore afterwards?
It's extremely rare, but if a large amount of wax was removed the canals can stay sensitive for a day or so. Over-the-counter painkillers usually settle it โ€” see your GP if pain continues or is moderate to severe, to rule out infection.
When should I see a GP instead?
If pain persists beyond a day or two, or is moderate to severe, book a GP appointment to rule out an ear infection. For general aftercare questions, call our team first and we'll happily advise.
