Ear irrigation — often called water irrigation — uses a controlled, body-temperature flow of water to gently flush wax from the ear canal. A far cry from old-fashioned syringing: modern ear irrigation is precise, comfortable and safe.
After an otoscope examination, warm water is directed along the wall of the ear canal in a controlled stream. The water loosens and carries the wax out into a small basin held under your ear.
Your clinician re-checks the canal afterwards and dries the ear thoroughly. The whole process typically takes just a few minutes per ear.
We avoid irrigation if you have a perforated eardrum, grommets, recent ear surgery or an active infection — in those cases microsuction is the safer choice. Your clinician assesses this at the start of every appointment, so you’ll always get the right method.
Irrigation works best on softened wax. Apply 2–3 drops of olive oil or a pharmacy softening spray, twice daily for 2–3 days before your appointment.
